“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)
Few things in life are inseparable.
Friends drift apart. Dear family members pass away. Relationships crumble. Even the strongest human love is susceptible to the perils of a broken world.
Romans 8 is one of my favorite chapters of the Bible, because in it, Paul describes a love without limits. He writes about God’s love being a tool of freedom, a source of goodness, and a force powerful enough to make us heirs of God.
And Paul promises that no matter what happens, no matter how bad the world gets, no matter how desperate we feel—none of those things will ever separate us from the love of God.
I find this passage to be particularly comforting in the current state of our world. Many of us are facing hardship, loss of jobs, sickness, division, and many other things that threaten our lives, health, security, and earthly relationships.
We live in a time filled with fear. 2020 hasn’t been very kind to us so far, and it’s scary to think about what might be next.
But can any of these risks separate us from the love of God?
No. Like Paul says, nothing can separate us from God’s love.
So how, then, should we live?
We are bound with the inseparable, powerful, perfect love of our Creator. This love is the greatest gift we could ever receive, a gift that fulfills every hope and promise of our Creator to His creation.
We can’t just sit around and act like this doesn’t change things! God’s love should draw us to action, to service, to humility, to justice. His love should draw us to manifesting that same love in our own lives.
If God’s love is the one power we can always trust, it is also the one hope we must share with those around us.
God’s love doesn’t just bind us to the Holy Spirit; it binds us to each other. We love each other because He first loved us.
And as followers of Christ, our challenge and our joy is to share that unconditional love, the same kind of love Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”
First, we live by mirroring God’s love to those around us.
And second, we remind ourselves again and again that no matter what this world throws at us, we have nothing to fear. For we are loved by the Creator of the universe, and He loves us with an inseparable love.
May we rest in the comfort and steadfastness of His love forever.
And never forget… you are onederfully created.
Love,
Becca
