Wonder by R.J. Palacio will always be one of my favorite books.

Wonder is the fictional story of August Pullman, a ten-year-old boy born with a severe facial difference. But Auggie’s world is about to change… he’s stepping out of the comfort of a supportive home and into an in-person school for the very first time.

And it sure is hard to look different from everyone else.

Wonder (Amazon Affiliate Link) has all the things you’d expect from a good book. True-to-life, imperfect, loveable characters, an invitation into their world, and a conflict that resonates with adults and children alike.

If you remember or can imagine what it’s like to be a ten-year-old kid about to walk into a new school for the first time, you’ll probably want to give Auggie a great big hug.

I wasn’t born with a facial difference like Auggie, but I was born with one arm. And I learned pretty quickly that people make a lot of judgments before they even speak to you.

We all do it.

We see someone with a physical disability or an unwelcoming expression or wearing certain clothing and we assume we know everything about them. Or, at least, we know whether or not we want to continue our relationship.

But we are so much more than what can be seen from the outside. We are unique, beloved, intentionally crafted by the Creator of the universe. And our physical differences can be sources of great beauty.

In Wonder, R.J. Palacio managed to combine perspectives from all angles of Auggie’s life, creating a complex and captivating story, and reminding us that we are more than our appearance.

And so is every other person in this world.

If you’ve read Wonder, I’d love to hear what you thought. And if you want a copy of your own, the link below is an affiliate link for Amazon, which helps support me in creating more posts like this one!

Never forget… you are also onederfully created.

Love,
