It’s easy to look forward to the big things in life.
In fact, it’s dangerously easy to narrow down the goodness in life to the big things we look forward to. And when we’re always looking forward to the next great thing, we find ourselves stuck in a constant state of waiting.
Especially now, when most of the big events have been canceled and we’re supposed to stay in our homes until further notice.
But if we are stuck in constant waiting, we stand to lose out on the daily beauties God gives us.
Maybe we need a shift in our focus. I don’t think it’s wrong to anticipate big things. I love having a vacation to look forward to, or plans with friends, or exciting beginnings to something new.
But what about when there aren’t any big things to look forward to? What about when weddings are canceled and vacation plans are put on hold?
What about the little things in life? What about our day-to-day blessings? If we’re constantly waiting and hoping for the next big thing that may or may not even happen, is it possible to be present in the moment? To steward the time and gifts God has given us right now?
I want to learn to anticipate the little things.
I want to wake up each morning with joy and anticipation for all that day holds— even when the season of life isn’t what I expected. I don’t want to wait for what’s bigger and better. I want to live for now.
Because I don’t want to waste this life God’s given me.
I’m sure I’m not alone in this. None of us want to waste our lives waiting. But how can we be more intentional with the things we look forward to?
I did a whole series on gratitude this fall, and this post on anticipation is closely linked to thankfulness. When we are more thankful on a daily basis, we come to see the beauty around us. The way God moves in each moment. And that gives us something to look forward to in every day.
So how do we learn to anticipate the little things?
- For me, writing down things I’m thankful for each day helps me keep a grateful perspective. In turn, that opens my eyes to the things I have to be excited for in every day as well. I look forward to seeing my kindergarten students as they respond to our online lessons. I look forward to spending time with family.
- Notice the simple things, like the way the sunlight streams in the window. Soon you will come to look forward to those moments as well.
- Be aware of God’s touch on all of creation.
- Pray for an eternal and grateful perspective.
Let’s anticipate the little things in our lives, and not get so swept up in the big things that we spend all our time waiting—and all our time disappointed when world events cause the big things to get canceled.
And never forget… you are onederfully created.
Love,
Becca
Brother David Stendl-Rast has a great take on some of what you’re saying:

What a great video! Thank you for sharing that.
Good word! I think this staying at home has opened lots of eyes to the little things. God is sooo incredible and it’s those little things that I have learned to appreciate so much more. Just having time to slow down and focus better. Thank you for the reminder. Love you lots!
Yes, I completely agree! Love you too!
This time has definitely been a drawing closer to God time for me. I’m in His word daily, I am praying more. He has been needing to get the world to just stop and be grateful for so long. That is how stubborn we have been. All He has ever wanted is for us to take a minute, be mindful of why we are here and yes, look at that ray of sun through the trees and thank God for the everyday little things we take for granted. Gratitude in the circumstance…every circumstance! Thank you, Becca, for the reminder. <3 xo
Lori, I’m so glad to hear this has been a time of drawing closer to God in your life! This season has made me much more mindful of how I’m spending my time and how I’m thinking about the circumstances. Thanks for reading!
