Have you ever read a book that takes place on an island made of trash?

I hadn’t until I read Jon Tilton’s debut novel, Please Return to the Lands of Luxury (Amazon Affiliate Link). And I’m so glad I did.

The first book in an exciting new middle grade dystopian adventure series, Please Return to the Lands of Luxury has many great surprises: adventure, twists and turns, fascinating settings and perspectives, and themes of friendship, family, and belonging.

In this story, Jane and her friends call an island of trash their home. When Jane discovers a beautiful doll in midst of all the garbage, she determines to return it to its rightful owner—Gloria Thatcher, according to the tag. Jane embarks on a dangerous journey that no one has dared take before.

The adventure leads her new places and shapes her life in ways she never could’ve imagined.

Here’s what I love about Please Return to the Lands of Luxury: even in a dystopian world—a literal island made of trash and filled with menacing robots—the characters discover the importance of sharing their stories, and how that connects them with those who love them most.

Sometimes, we are tempted to hold our stories and our memories close to our own hearts. We don’t want to share. Maybe we think sharing our stories will hurt too much. Maybe we’re afraid of being misunderstood or judged.

But God has given us our stories for a reason. He’s given us our friends and family for a reason.

And so much beauty can come when we open up our lives and our hearts to the people who love us.

We are not meant to carry our burdens, memories, heartaches, and mistakes on our own. We are created to share in community.

I love how this children’s dystopian novel reminds me of that. And, I’m so glad Please Return to the Lands of Luxury is the first in a series, because I’m looking forward to seeing more of these characters and discovering what happens next in their stories!
